OLD NEWS (ARCHIVE)

7/1/99 Dedication T-shirts
T-shirts with a picture of the temple and the date of the dedication are being made, and will be sold for 14,000-40,000 sucres (about $1.40-$4) each, depending on the size. There are many sizes available (S-XXXL, plus children's sizes by age).
If you are traveling to the dedication and would like t-shirts reserved for you, send an e-mail message to Esperanza Cabeza de Vaca (ecabeza@banred.fin.ec) indicating the quantity and sizes you want. You can pick them up at the Kennedy chapel on Saturday, the 31st of July (before the multi-regional conference at El Estadio Modelo).
If you are not traveling to the dedication, but would still like t-shirts, let me know and we'll figure out a way to get some to you.

3/15/99 Official Dates Announced in Church News and to Wards in Guayaquil
The official dates for the Open House and Dedication were announced in the Church News for the week ending March 13. As we have already been told, the Open House will be held May 1-15, and the Dedicatory Sessions will be conducted May 22-24.
From a friend in Guayaquil:
2/10/99 How To Get Tickets: Revised
From Laura Whitney:
Troy,
For temple information, the number to call is 1-801-240-3801. As of today, February 10th, 1999, this is what's real.
No date has been set, therefore there are no tickets to get.
The tickets are referred to as "dedication recommends."
Two letters have to be sent to the Temple Department. Letter #1 is from us. We need to indicate the number of tickets and names of the persons attending the dedication. Why we want to attend and what dedication date. If you have friends who live in a certain area of Guayaquil, their stake or area is assigned a certain dedication day, therefore, you would want to indicate the area or stake you wish to attend with. The temple department said this letter needs to be very detailed.
Letter #2 is from your Bishop, on ward letterhead, indicating you are temple worthy and requesting "dedication recommends". Your name needs to be included with the request.
The two letters go in one envelope and are sent to:
     Temple Department
     50 E. North Temple St.
     4th Floor
     SLC, UT 84150
On the outside of the envelope, indicate "Dedication Recommends for Guayaquil Temple".
The tickets will be sent back to the Bishop and he then will sign them and give them to us. The secretary in the temple department said there are plenty of tickets set aside for those of us, not living within the temple district, who wish to attend.
2/8/99 Precautions To Take
I received some more very useful information from a friend in Ecuador. In summary:
  • A state of emergency is in effect for Guayaquil and the entire province of Guayas because of the high crime rate. Mostly car theft and robbery of banks, businesses, shops and gas stations. Taxis are still fairly reasonable (although not as cheap as you might expect), but renting a car is much safer.
  • Make sure you always carry a copy of your passport (leave the original at the hotel for safekeeping) and, if you rent a car, your driver's license.
  • If you rent a car, make sure that the quoted price includes taxes, insurance, and unlimited mileage. It is easy (and expensive) to exceed a mileage quota. Also, insurance doesn't cover the entire value of the car. Typically, when you rent a car you will be required to sign two credit card vouchers: One for the rent, and another for whatever your deductible is (usually in the millions of Sucres). If you return the car intact, you get that voucher back; otherwise, it will be used to pay for any losses.
  • Visa, Mastercard and American Express are accepted at most hotels, restaurants, and car rentals. You probably don't need to carry traveller's checks, since you can withdraw cash from your checking account at an ATM machine if you have a debit card with a Visa, MasterCard, Plus or Cirrus logo. You can also get cash advances on your Visa or MastarCard at any major bank branch.
  • Confirm your return flight three days before you plan to return home.
Here's the whole message:
From a friend in Guayaquil:

1/7/99 How To Get Tickets
Katherine Tanner contributed this information to the mailing list:
I just spoke with the key contact in the Temple Department for the temple dedications. He gave some interesting information regarding the dedication as follows: The tickets for dedication sessions are being distributed locally (we cannot acquire them through SLC, but only through Guayaquil). The process for us to request (and hopefully acquire) them is for each of us individually to have our bishop write a letter to the vice-chairman indicating our temple worthiness and formally requesting (x) number of tickets, specifying which date and session we want. The vice-chairman to write to is:
  Luis Guillermo Granja
  Decima 122 y Boliva
  Colonia LaChala
  Guayaquil Ecuador
I was informed that either the tickets will be sent to our bishops for him to sign and give to us, or they will be at a "will call" location.
He also mentioned to me, without my asking, that the dates of the dedication have not officially been released. I told him that I had understood the dates to be May 22-24, and he said that the First Presidency has not released any dates and that may or may not be accurate. He said to look in the Church News in the next couple of weeks for the "official" announcement.
1/6/99 Fare Change!
More information from Trevor:
I have some minor bad news. We just received an addendum to our bulk contract. The only change that deals with flying to Guayaquil is the Newark special rate. It jumped up $75. They didn't provide any explanation to it.
Sorry for the bad news. If anyone was planning on using that rate they should call and book as soon as they have decided. I will try to get our original rate extended since it is the quote I originally used. Otherwise the price will be $440/person.
I have heard from a few RM's planning the trip. We have space held for those who have called.
1/5/99 Fares From Utah, Arizona, Etc.
More information from Trevor:
Our bulk rates are as follows:
Utah/California/Nevada $670.40/person
Los Angeles $655.40/person
Arizona/Colorado $620.40/person

Idaho is not listed on our bulk rates. They would need to find the cheapest flight to Salt Lake and then pay the applicable Salt Lake fare.
All of these rates are based on availability in the class of service that we need and it appears there are others planning to travel for the dedication. The flights down from Salt Lake (all flights are through Houston, so availability should be similar) are available on May 16,17,19,22,23. The ideal day to travel would be the May 21, so that you could arrive before the dedication ceremonies begin. Unfortunately that day is taken.
1/5/99 Information from Travel Agent in SLC
I am working with Trevor Walton, a travel agent at PanAmerican Travel Services in SLC, to try to find the best, most economical way to get to Guayaquil for the dedication. I received this from him:
Troy,
I have some prices and possibilities for the trip to Guayaquil. I spoke with Continental, and it turns out that we can get the same rate (or cheaper) using our bulk contract with them.
The flights can be arranged from the individual departure cities. All flights are based on availability in the class of service that we need. If this class is not available when everyone is ready to book, we will have to try and work out a group rate.
We have an extra special savings from Newark that goes along with our contract. It is a daily round trip flight. I checked the dates departing May 21 and returning May 26 for possibilities. They had over 30 seats available in the class of service we needed to get that rate.
Newark - Guayaquil $365.40/person round trip
The cheapest rate based on our normal contracted rates is from Miami.
Miami - Guayaquil $480.40/person round trip
I also checked with one of the leading South American airlines (LanChile) and found a cheap published rate from Miami. The flights are only offered on certain days, which makes it a little more complicated to set time schedules. They did have a few seats available for the dates of May 21 returning May 26.
LanChile Miami - Guayaquil $440.40/person round trip
The cheapest hotel near the Temple is the Hostal Tangara. It is located in the Ciudadela Bolivariana between Manuela Saenz street and O'leary in a residential area of the city. The Urdesa zone.
The rooms have double or triple capacity, private bathroom, hot water, air conditioning. It has a capacity of approximately 30 people. The living area of the Hostal has TV with cable.
It is approximately a 3 star rating. Not top of the line, but not a bad choice for the price.
A double room runs $29/person/night A triple room runs $21/person/night (incl. taxes).
Other hotels are available and there are some good rates, but they are not as close to the Temple. If there are more traveling than the space we have, we will look into these hostals and hotels as well. They should be similar in price.
I hope this information is a helpful start for the trip to Guayaquil. If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Ron Sasine recently visited Guayaquil and had a great experience traveling around the city. Click here to read his report and see some great photos!
12/9/98 Dedication Sessions: May 22-24, 1999
From Lamar Taylor:
The dedication will be held on May 22, 23, 24 of 1999 in Ecuador.
12/3/98 Temple Dedication To Be Held May 20-24, 1999:
From Lamar Taylor:
I have some new and exciting news about the temple dedication in Ecuador. The dedication is not going to be in June. It is going to be during May 20-24. Actually the dedication will only be done on 3 of these days listed. I will get back to you on the actual dates but it will be done during the weekend listed. All of this information comes by way of my Mission President. So change your calendars to May.
10/15/98 From The Discussion:
From Wendy Recalde Grunauer:
(Correct address: lr58@email.byu.edu)
From Brett Simmons:
I recently spoke with some people I remain in contact with from Guayaquil, and last week it was announced that the temple would be dedicated in June, as we've also been told, but that an open house would take place in February, so those that want to go sooner, and don't want to nessesarily have to have tickets and such things, can go then, I don't know how long the open house thing will continue?? Dumb me I didn't think to ask.
10/7/98 Temple Dedication In June
From Rob Evans:
I just ran into some girls from the Pradera ward in Guay. The temple dedication is officially set for sometime in June. Wards have one more week to submit names for tickets. Supposedly she can take any names and forward them to her folks in Guay and they will then pass it on to the Bishop, etc. WE HAVE ONE MORE WEEK!!! Of course, we may somehow work out a deal through the area offices in Quito if we let them know we are coming. The girls name is Laurice Grunauer and her email is lr58@email.byu.edu (corrected).
Get back to me asap. I will try to confirm this from other sources but it seems 100% legit.
8/13/98 Temple Dedication Probably In May 1999
It is likely that the dedication of the Guayaquil Temple will take place in May, according to sources in Quito.  No definite date has been set.
8/5/98 President Hinckley: Temple To Be Finished In February 1999
From Special Meeting, Shaw Convention Centre, Edmonton, Alberta, Sunday 02.08.98 14:00 - 15:30:
"We're building temples in places like Anchorage, Alaska, which will be ready in January; Colonia Juarez, Mexico, which will be ready in January; down in Guayaquil, Ecuador, which will be ready in February; and in Bogota, Colombia, and Madrid, in Spain. Just think -- a temple in Spain! There'll be a temple in Fiji, and in Accra, Ghana, in West Africa!"

Thanks to Sean and Vivian (Brower) Foley for this information

3/24/98 Temple Dedication Delayed?
The devastating effects of El Niño may delay the temple dedication until spring of 1999.  In any case, it certainly won't be before the end of the year, so keep saving your Sucres!
Let's keep our friends in Ecuador in our prayers—it sounds like they're getting hit pretty hard.

You can find up-to-date information about entry requirements, security information, etc., at the U.S. State Department's Consular Information Sheet.
2/2/98 Oops!  Previous Announcement Premature?
Tamar Jean, upon receiving the "News Flash" that I sent to many of you, did some checking around and discovered that the report below (about the temple being dedicated on November 2, 1998) may be premature.  She says:
I read your news flash about the temple dedication in Ecuador.  I got the feeling that something was not just right, so I called my mom and she asked Brother Sears' (the guy in charge of the temple construction) wife about it.  She became very upset and told her that these are just rumors.  The person that sets the date for the temple dedication is the prophet.  For that to happen, he has to call and coordinate with Brother Sears and other church officials and then make that announcement.  That will not happen until the first trimester of 1999.  Even the top ranking officials don't know exactly when in the first trimester.
It is true that the Moroni statue will go up in March, and the external phases have been accelerated, but the finish work and details inside still have a long way to go to completion.  They can't set a date yet because of uncertainties in shipping the materials from the US and other places for this finish work.
So, we should probably be setting our sites back to early 1999.
2/2/98 Dedication Date Announced to Choir:  November 2, 1998!
A friend in Guayaquil sent me the following:
Budget : Susuki Forza (compacto, 2 puertas) : 199 dolares + 1200 kms Chevrolet Forza (compacto, 2 puertas) : 235 dolares + 1200 kms Hyundai Assent (4 puertas) : 277 dolares + 1200 kms
Localiza Rent a Car: Mini Van Hyundai full equipo (12 pasajeros) : 628 dolares + 800 kms.
1/5/98 Some Less Expensive Hotels
Hotel Doral : $35
Hotel Palace : sencilla $55, doble $76 (no incluye desayuno)
Hotel Rizzo : $27
Hotel Plaza : $27
12/29/97 Some Hotel Prices in Guayaquil
12/26/97 The Angel Moroni to be placed in March!
